Pizza or Calzone

Selina and mine’s favourite go to food is pizza. There are local pizza places that we love, but sometimes you just want to make your own pizza at home. With our left over dough we’re going to be making some nutella and banana pizza for desert!

The curst we are making produces a fairly sweet crust, so it will be a bit different from what some people are used to. That said, it makes a great pizza crust for a dinner pizza, or a dessert pizza.

Ingredients - Pizza Dough

  • 1-3/4 teaspoon of dry, active yeast

  • 1 -1/3 cups of warm water

  • 2-2/3 Cups of bread flour

  • 2-1/2 Tablespoons olive oil

  • 1-1/4 teaspoon of salt

  • 2-3/4 teaspoon of sugar

Ingredients - Pizza Sauce

  • 6 oz tomato paste (1 -6 oz can)

  • 15 oz tomato sauce (1 - 15 oz can)

  • 1-2 TBS oregano to taste

  • 2 TBS Italian seasoning

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • ½ TBS garlic salt

  • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 tsp sugar

*Alternatively, you can use pesto

Instructions - Pizza dough

  1. In a small bowl, place the yeast and warm water together. Let sit until the water becomes creamy, which should be about 10 minutes.

  2. In your larger bowl, mix all dry ingredients together and the olive oil.

  3. Add in water and yeast mixture, mix until well incorporated. A stiff dough should form

  4. Place in a warm place and let sit until the dough has doubled. 30 to 60 minutes.

  5. Preheat oven to 350°F

  6. Roll out dough to rough shape on a well floured surface (we will be doing multiple as we are making calzones)

Instructions - Pizza Sauce

  1. Place all ingredients in a food processor - blend well.

    1. If you don’t have a food processor, place the tomato paste and tomato sauce into a bowl and mix well until fully incorporated

    2. Then mix other ingredients together until fully blended

  2. Add to recipe

Instructions - Calzones

  1. Make pizza crust from above

  2. Preheat oven to 500°F

  3. Roll out smaller disks - we are aiming for 8”

  4. Place toppings in the middle of the crust

  5. Fold crust over itself in half

  6. Moisten and pinch up the crust edges. Cut small slits in the top to allow steam to escape, then brush on olive oil

  7. Place in oven for 20 minutes. Crust should start to turn golden brown, and you should see bubbling from your crust.

  8. Clean your workspace

  9. Remove from oven - let sit for 5 minutes to cool.
